Mahalia Toussaint, named after the gospel singer and called Hali by people who have earned it, was born in Tremé and raised between New Orleans and her aunt's house in Lafayette. She sings four nights a week in a tiny upstairs room on Frenchmen Street and records at home when the mood hits.
